Book Studies

During the school year, we are offering in-person, on-site, interactive book studies specifically designed for homeschooled middle school students.  We break an age-appropriate book down into four sessions and discuss the book together with each attendee being responsible for reading the book between sessions at home.  Each session will last about an hour and will include study aids and worksheets.

If you're interested in learning more about an upcoming book study or if you have a suggestion for a book or topic, reach out to Jennifer at info@thecuriousquill.com.

SHAY THE BRAVE

$25 INCLUDES THE BOOK AND STUDY MATERIALS WITH THE OPTION TO ADD ON A JOURNAL FOR $20 MORE

"Shay the Brave" tells the story of a spirited young girl named Shay who lives in the fortress of Oldenshire and dreams of wearing practical britches and having short hair. More than that, she wishes her community would stop eating meat.

When a creature called a pouncer is captured to be the main course for the Harvest Revel, Shay, with the help of Alexy (the mute son of the laundress) and Bridger (her father's retired warhorse), devises a plan to free the animal before it's cooked.

The pouncer later repays Shay's kindness by bringing its own kingdom to defend Oldenshire when it comes under attack. However, the soldiers of Oldenshire view the forest creatures as enemies, leading to conflict fueled by cultural differences, language barriers, fear, and misunderstanding.

Shay, with her mathematical mind, sees the potential for war. She and Alexy must find a way to bridge the gap between the two kingdoms before their families and friends on both sides are harmed. In the process of trying to save everyone, Shay discovers a new kind of bravery: the courage to be her true self.
